What published UK plans say about leaving early, and what to check before you stop paying.

What you need to know

You can leave a pet health plan, but the written terms decide what you still pay. We recommend confirming the cancellation date and any amount still due before you change a Direct Debit, because stopping the payment may not settle the contract. Some plans ask for remaining monthly payments, some charge a fee, some reprice used benefits, and many do not publish a clear early-exit rule.

What published plans actually say

On 30 August 2026 we reviewed the 46 published UK pet health plans then in the VetsCompared catalogue. Those figures describe that catalogue, not every plan sold in the UK. Six said remaining monthly payments stay due if you leave early. Six named a cancellation fee. One said used benefits can be recalculated at ordinary non-plan prices. Thirty-three did not publish a clear early-exit model. Some also specify a minimum term or automatic renewal. Those counts are a snapshot of published wording, not a ranking and not a substitute for the terms of the plan you joined.

How the different exit models work

  • Remaining term: you still pay the monthly amounts the terms still require.
  • Used benefits at ordinary prices: vaccinations or other care already received can be recharged at the usual non-plan price.
  • A stated cancellation fee: an amount written in the terms.
  • Not listed: the published material does not say.

Before you cancel

  1. Read the current terms for notice, minimum term, renewal and the amount still due.
  2. Follow the notice method those terms require.
  3. Ask the provider to confirm the cancellation date and the final amount in writing.
  4. Then change or cancel the Direct Debit, following any timing the provider confirms.
