How pet health plans work

What you are paying for

Pet health plans are monthly or annual packages sold by veterinary practices. Common names include pet health plan, pet care plan, healthy pet club and wellness plan. Those names are marketing labels, not a separate legal product. The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA), the UK competition regulator, uses the phrase veterinary pet care plans in its transparency work after investigating the vet market.

What published packages usually list

Typical published lists include core vaccinations, routine parasite prevention, an annual health check or vaccination appointment, and a discount on further products or services. Some plans add nail clips, dental checks or urine tests. Age, species and weight can change the price or eligibility, so a figure written for a young cat is not automatically the price for an older dog. If the same business also sells pet insurance, that is still a separate contract.
